Parliament takes a step closer to Gloria’s Law

6 June 2023

Today, Dan Carden MP tabled a Ten Minute Rule Bill to bring in Gloria’s Law. It would give us all the right to a Care Supporter - a relative or friend to support us when we’re using health and care services. The Bill was agreed to and will now pass to its next stage in November. This is a major step forward in our Rights For Residents campaign.

The reading of the Bill followed an emotional and powerful event in Parliament this morning. MPs from all parties heard from families still traumatised by witnessing the impact that isolation and separation had on their loved ones during the pandemic. Read the powerful speeches from:

  • Diane Mayhew, Rights For Residents Campaign Manager at Care Rights UK

  • Hazel, whose mum Barbara died in care during the pandemic

  • Jo Scadden whose mum died in hospital

  • David Britton, Associate Director of Nursing at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust on the steps the hospital has taken to welcome family carers

We’ll provide an update as soon as we can on what you can do next to support the Care Supporters Bill. In the meantime, watch Dan Carden MP’s powerful speech about why we must urgently pass Gloria’s Law.
